Foreword

Marine Life Rescue, covers a patrol area from Inverbervie (South of Stonehaven) to Easthaven (South of Arbroath). Volunteer British Divers Marine Life Rescue trained Medics and Volunteer helpers patrol these areas on a regular basis. All cetacean and pinniped sightings are recorded, carcasses measured, logged and filed before removal from the beaches within these patrol areas, and the team are on call to attend abandoned and injured seal pups and to assist in the refloatation of cetaceans that become stranded. The group recently welcomed additional help from Robson & Partners (veterinary surgeons) who have come on board to assist the team with urgent medical cases and to provide euthanasia to the Marine Mammals that are beyond help. The veterinary surgeons will be in constant communication with BDMLR'S own vet & Director James Barnett. The group was formed on April 15th 2003 after BDMLR Medic Elaine Roft organised a Marine Mammal Medic Course for her area in a bid to receive much sought after help, back up and assistance.

The Medic course was held in March of 2003 at Montrose, with lectures being carried out at the Coastguard station and the practical session performed on the beach. The course comprised of local coastguards and members of the public who were eager to become a part of this UK based charity dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of Marine Mammals. The Medics and Volunteers participate in further seal handling opportunities available to them at Oban and Orkney Seal Rescue and some have gone on to gain knowledge and instruction on powerboat courses. The Medics and volunteers attend monthly meetings and are available to assist other groups when called upon.

Elaine Roft is now the Coordinator for Marine Life Rescue (Inverbervie- Easthaven) with Medic Bob Pert acting as Deputy Coordinator.
